When I painted “Nightwood,” I was thinking about the natural cycle of the forest, and how fire can be part of that cycle when it happens in its proper place. In the right conditions, fire clears away old growth, returns nutrients to the soil, and makes room for new life to begin again. Some trees, including certain pines, even rely on the heat of fire to open their cones and release seeds. At the same time, I know forest fires are not just an idea in a painting. They bring real loss, smoke, fear, and devastation, and there are men and women around the world risking their lives to fight them. I wanted this painting to hold that tension: the force and danger of fire, but also the change, renewal, and resilience that can exist within the natural world.
