The cardinal’s vivid red plumage emerges against layered violet-grey skies, preserving both the energy of the brushwork and the striking visual tension found within the original artwork.
Male cardinals always appear quietly fierce, with their inquisitive and defined heads and beaks. When they do break their silence, they have a rhythmic and piercing call. Compared to the neutral plumage of their female counterparts, the male cardinal is a red beacon, gleaming amongst the surrounding environment. It is no surprise that such a glowing vision needs to have a militant quality about their demeanour. This piece displays the intensity of the cardinal in saturated pigments of quinacridone red, and napthol red. His fiery figure is poised against a cloudy sky, dense with titan violet grey paint.
