이 그림은 우리 대부분이 이해할 수 있는 감정에서 비롯되었습니다. 주변에서 일어나는 일이나 우리 자신의 삶 속의 일들로 인해 삶이 때때로 버겁게 느껴질 수 있고, 그 순간 너머에 무엇이 있는지 놓치기 쉽습니다. 이 작품에서는 폭풍이 섬을 둘러싸고 있는 듯하고, 물결은 불안하게 일렁이며, 하늘은 어둡고 불편한 기운을 품고 있습니다. 하지만 그 모든 것의 중심에서 섬은 빛을 받고 있습니다. 나무들은 뿌리 아래 흙이 거의 없는, 바위에 가까운 곳에서 서로 어우러져 자라고 있으며, 저는 그 안에 깃든 강인함이 마음에 듭니다. 나무들은 드러난 채 사방이 둘러싸여 있으면서도 여전히 서 있고, 어떤 나무들은 번성하기까지 합니다.

저에게 “Light Always Breaks Through”는 어둠이 결코 전체 이야기가 아니라는 사실을 일깨워 줍니다. 힘든 시기는 우리의 관심을 너무 많이 차지해 그 너머에도 여전히 희망이 있다는 사실을 잊기 쉽습니다. 빛은 그 주변에서 일어나는 일을 지워 버리지는 않지만, 더 밝은 순간은 언제나 존재하며 단지 그것을 보기가 더 어려울 때가 있을 뿐이라는 사실을 떠올리게 합니다.
