Visible from many places in Thunder Bay, “The Sleeping Giant” is the city’s most well known natural wonder. The land form resembles a giant lying on its back when viewed from the west to north-northwest. It has a wonderful history that is well worth researching to learn more about. I completed this painting of the treasured landmark as a commission.
This piece also features a stunning dynamic cloudscape that is thick and extremely high. The sun is piercing through the lofty clouds onto the water in rays of gold and silver. The rolling forms of the clouds are opposed by the watery horizon line, and the vertical beams of sunlight. The palette of this painting is rich in cerulean and cyan blue. Highlights of turquoise, teal and naples yellow add dimension and juxtapose the darker elements. The understated city below is completed in soft sap and pthalo greens.

Jeff Dillon the Canadian Artist, inspired by the bold colours and brush strokes of Post-Impressionist Artists. His unique style focuses on capturing light, not through the detail of realism, but with gesture, illusion, shape and colour. He offers a personal and distinctive style to the world through his bold use of colours and lines, often symbolic images or subject matter. Objects in the paintings retain their realistic appearance yet have a vibrancy and fluidity about them, unique to his work. Jeff Dillon’s new expression of Post-Impressionism is both beloved and revered in the Canadian and Global Contemporary Art World.
