Dusk changes the rhythm of the forest, and with it the awareness of the owl. In this heavy body acrylic painting by Canadian artist Jeff Dillon, the great grey owl appears alert and fully engaged with the darkening landscape around it. The layered movement of the background and raised plumage create a feeling of tension and concentration just before flight.

As night approaches, the great grey owl’s vision sharpens and the darkened night landscape becomes clearer. Owls are often pictured in stationary, solemn poses but this piece aims to communicate the calculated intensity of their nature.
