این نقاشی از احساسی سرچشمه گرفت که فکر می‌کنم بیشتر ما آن را درک می‌کنیم. زندگی گاهی می‌تواند سنگین شود؛ چه به‌دلیل اتفاقاتی که در اطرافمان رخ می‌دهد و چه به‌خاطر شرایط زندگی خودمان، و ممکن است به‌راحتی از آنچه فراتر از آن لحظه قرار دارد غافل شویم. در این اثر، به نظر می‌رسد طوفان جزیره را دربر گرفته است، آب ناآرام است و آسمان تاریک و ناآرام به نظر می‌رسد. بااین‌حال، در مرکز همه این‌ها، جزیره روشن شده است. درختان روی چیزی جز صخره رشد کرده‌اند و خاک بسیار کمی زیر آن‌هاست، و من استواری نهفته در این منظره را دوست دارم. آن‌ها در معرض باد و باران‌اند، احاطه شده‌اند و همچنان پابرجا هستند و در برخی موارد، حتی رشد و شکوفایی دارند.

برای من، «نور همیشه راه خود را باز می‌کند» یادآور این است که تاریکی هرگز تمام تصویر نیست. دوره‌های دشوار می‌توانند آن‌قدر توجه ما را به خود جلب کنند که به‌راحتی فراموش کنیم پس از آن‌ها هنوز امید وجود دارد. نور آنچه را در اطرافش رخ می‌دهد محو نمی‌کند، اما به من یادآوری می‌کند که لحظه‌های روشن‌تر همیشه وجود دارند، حتی وقتی دیدنشان دشوارتر است.
