Dieses Gemälde entstand aus einem Gefühl, das die meisten von uns wohl nachvollziehen können. Das Leben kann sich manchmal schwer anfühlen – sei es durch Dinge, die um uns herum geschehen, oder durch Ereignisse in unserem eigenen Leben –, und es kann leicht passieren, dass wir aus den Augen verlieren, was jenseits dieses Augenblicks liegt. In diesem Werk scheint der Sturm die Insel zu umgeben, das Wasser ist unruhig, und der Himmel wirkt dunkel und bedrückend. Doch im Zentrum des Ganzen wird die Insel erhellt. Die Bäume wachsen auf kaum mehr als Felsen, mit sehr wenig Erde unter sich, und ich liebe die Stärke, die darin liegt. Sie sind ungeschützt und umgeben von den Elementen – und stehen trotzdem noch, in manchen Fällen gedeihen sie sogar.

Für mich ist „Light Always Breaks Through“ eine Erinnerung daran, dass die Dunkelheit niemals das ganze Bild ist. Schwierige Zeiten können so viel unserer Aufmerksamkeit beanspruchen, dass wir leicht vergessen, dass hinter ihnen noch Hoffnung liegt. Das Licht lässt nicht verschwinden, was um es herum geschieht, aber es erinnert mich daran, dass es immer hellere Momente gibt, selbst wenn sie schwerer zu erkennen sind.
