Dit schilderij komt voort uit een gevoel dat de meesten van ons wel zullen herkennen. Het leven kan soms zwaar worden, door dingen die om ons heen gebeuren of door wat er in ons eigen leven speelt, en het kan gemakkelijk zijn om uit het oog te verliezen wat er voorbij dat moment ligt. In dit werk lijkt de storm het eiland te omringen, is het water onrustig en voelt de lucht donker en beklemmend aan. Toch wordt het eiland in het middelpunt van dit alles verlicht. De bomen groeien samen op niet veel meer dan rots, met heel weinig grond onder zich, en ik houd van de kracht die daarin schuilt. Ze zijn blootgesteld aan de elementen, omringd en staan nog steeds overeind - en in sommige gevallen gedijen ze zelfs.

Voor mij is “Light Always Breaks Through” een herinnering dat duisternis nooit het hele verhaal is. Moeilijke periodes kunnen zo veel van onze aandacht opeisen dat het gemakkelijk wordt te vergeten dat er nog steeds hoop achter schuilgaat. Het licht wist niet uit wat er omheen gebeurt, maar herinnert me eraan dat er altijd helderdere momenten bestaan, zelfs wanneer die moeilijker te zien zijn.
