Ngorongoro (En-gor-on-GOR-oh) Crater in Tanzania has a scale that is hard to separate from the wildlife moving through it. Formed when an ancient volcano collapsed inward, the crater now holds open grassland, distant mountains, shifting sky, and some of Africa’s most recognizable wildlife. In this painting, a bull elephant follows the road through that wide landscape, with three cattle egrets staying close by and another lifting into the sky.

I wanted the elephant to feel fully part of the road, the grasses, and the wide open land around it. The road, birds, distant hills, and open sky all help hold the memory of the place. “Ngorongoro: Where Giants Walk” speaks to the bull elephant, but also to the crater itself, a landscape shaped by volcanic force, time, wildlife, and distance.
