Windswept evergreens, exposed granite, open water, and expansive sky remain some of the defining forms of the northern Canadian landscape. In this heavy body acrylic painting by Canadian artist Jeff Dillon, those familiar elements are brought together through layered movement and expressive brushwork that began shaping the visual language that would later become central to his work.

What else reveals a Northern Canada landscape but trees, stone, water, and sky? Here I have styled the background in shades of blue that blend both sky and water, firmly grounding the wind crafted evergreen into the foreground. Clinging to the edge of rocky Muskoka granite the tree seems well rooted and able to withstand any storm. This is a work from an earlier period of my career and reveals my experimentation with my now signature defining brush strokes, imposed against a fluid blue background.
