Moving quietly through a dense autumn forest, the wolf in this heavy body acrylic painting by Canadian artist Jeff Dillon carries a strong sense of presence and control. Its broad silhouette and thick fur dominate the composition while the surrounding woodland closes in around the figure like a cathedral shaped by colour, shadow, and movement.

The wolf’s looming silhouette and thick coat of fur create an intimidating form. The wolf is often revered as being the king of the forest, and this is embodied in the all encompassing nature of this wolf’s stance. Its eyes are almost obscured from the viewer, as the wolf overlooks its territory, slinking through a cathedral of forest. This painting is rich in jewel toned autumn colour, communicating the saturated atmosphere of the surrounding environment through layered greens, warm oranges, muted creams, and slate-grey tones.
