The focus of this heavy body acrylic painting by Canadian artist Jeff Dillon rests almost entirely within the eye of the hawk. Layered feather movement and directional linework pull the viewer inward, creating a sense of tension and concentration as the bird prepares itself for flight.

The background is muted against the converging details of the plumage and structure of the eye and beak. The linework of the face feels as though a whirlpool of feathers is leading you to the eye. The feathers are completed in warm ochre and brown tones, while the eye carries vivid blue-black contrast that sharpens the intensity of the gaze.
