Seasonal change often reveals itself in small details first. In this heavy body acrylic painting by Canadian artist Jeff Dillon, a European Starling rests quietly among fresh spring buds as its winter plumage begins shifting toward the darker tones of summer. Layered brushwork and subtle colour variation bring attention to the transition taking place within both the bird and the season itself.

European Starlings are now among North America’s most numerous songbirds. They are known to be covered in white spots during winter, but interestingly take on a glossy dark plumage in summer. This starling is taking shelter in some fresh spring buds, and its speckled winter feathers are slowly but surely transitioning to those of summer, an inky cerulean blue-black.
The accompanying Certificate of Authenticity is also hand-signed and numbered by the artist.
