Direct eye contact changes the way we experience an animal portrait. In this original heavy body acrylic painting, Canadian artist Jeff Dillon brings the viewer close to the face of a chimpanzee, focusing on expression, awareness, and the striking familiarity we often recognize within primates.

This chimpanzee appears very similar to us, and that likeness is exactly what inspired this piece. I have an affinity for painting animals’ faces close up, where it feels like the animal is looking back at you. My intention is for the animal to meet your gaze, as if they’re focusing on you the same way you’re focusing on them. This chimpanzee carries a sense of wisdom and quiet intelligence through its eyes and facial structure. Layered warm and cool tones throughout the composition help create depth, emotion, and an intimate connection between the subject and viewer.
The accompanying Certificate of Authenticity is also hand-signed and numbered by the artist.
