#183 – Wisdom – Original Painting

Stillness and direct observation shape the atmosphere of this original heavy body acrylic painting by Canadian artist Jeff Dillon, featuring an owl fixed in an unwavering gaze against the depth of night. The composition draws attention to the bird’s eyes and layered plumage, creating a close and almost confrontational sense of presence between the owl and the viewer.

The ancient Greeks thought that owls had an inner light that helped them to see in the dark and made them seem thoughtful and wise. It might also be their intense stare, and their contemplation while sitting so still and quiet in the branches awaiting their next meal. Because an owl has to turn its head toward the direction of interest, it often gives the impression of deep concentration.

In this painting I have captured the direct gaze and focus through the owl’s golden eyes and earth toned feathers, colours that pull the viewer into a more intimate relationship with the bird itself. Are we being watched or the one watching? The depth of the background hints at the owl’s favourite time of day, the depth of night. Layered brushwork throughout the plumage adds movement and texture while maintaining the quiet intensity of the scene.
