Light changes the appearance of this grackle completely in this original heavy body acrylic painting by Canadian artist Jeff Dillon. What first appears dark and understated begins to reveal flashes of iridescent colour as the bird catches the light, bringing attention to the layered detail and shifting surface of its plumage.

This violet hued grackle is catching the light in such a way that the opal-like colours of its plumage are revealed. In quick passing, these birds often appear a stark black. It is a treat to see their feathers illuminate with these iridescent colours, vividly contrasting their usual shadowy form. The surrounding branch and foliage provide a soft natural contrast that allows the reflective quality of the bird’s feathers to remain the focal point of the composition.
