#294 – The Jack Pine – Original Painting
Choose options
Shaped by the rugged shoreline and changing weather of northern Ontario, this original heavy body acrylic painting on canvas by Canadian artist Jeff Dillon reflects a strong connection to the Canadian landscape and the quieter character found within it. Movement through the clouds, grasses, and windswept pines gives the scene a steady rhythm while layered brushwork and textured surface detail hold onto the strength and presence of the land itself.
What continues to pull me back to northern Ontario is the way the landscape feels shaped by exposure and time rather than untouched or polished. Pines lean from years of wind coming across the shoreline. Rock, grass, and water settle into one another without sharp separation between them. In this piece, the clouds open just enough for light to move across parts of the land while other areas remain subdued and quieter in tone. I’ve always been drawn to trees in particular because of how much character they carry simply through their shape and posture. There’s a resilience to them that feels honest. This painting was also influenced by my admiration for the Group of Seven and the way they painted the Canadian landscape with both structure and feeling, allowing the land itself to carry the emotion rather than forcing it onto the scene.
