The challenge in this original heavy body acrylic painting by Canadian artist Jeff Dillon came through the shifting transparency and reflected colour within the dragonfly’s wings. Depending on the angle and light, the surfaces move between translucency and iridescence, revealing fragments of colour that never fully settle into a single tone or reflection.

I chose to paint a dragonfly because I felt challenged by the composition. I worked carefully to mix pigments that would communicate the iridescent panes of the dragonfly’s wings; depending on the light, the wings can appear semi translucent or like a glimmering mosaic of colours. I find it interesting that the colours of the wings don’t fully represent what lies in front or behind them.
The accompanying Certificate of Authenticity is also hand-signed and numbered by the artist.
